Theo thống kê của Bộ Y tế và Bộ Tài nguyên - Môi trường, trung bình mỗi năm Việt Nam có khoảng 9.000 người tử vong vì nguồn nước và điều kiện vệ sinh kém. Cũng theo đánh giá tổng hợp của Bộ, hằng năm có gần 200.000 người mắc bệnh ung thư mới phát hiện mà một trong những nguyên nhân chính bắt nguồn từ ô nhiễm môi trường nước.
Trên thực tế, một số địa phương như xã Hưng Thạnh, xã Thạnh Tân (Tiền Giang), xã Duy Hòa (Quảng Nam), các ca nhiễm ung thư, viêm nhiễm ở phụ nữ do sử dụng nguồn nước ô nhiễm chiếm đến gần 40% dân cư toàn xã, có nơi lên đến 50%.

Việt Nam hiện thuộc nhóm quốc gia “thiếu nước” do lượng nước mặt bình quân đầu người mỗi năm chỉ đạt 3.840 m3, thấp hơn chỉ tiêu 4.000 m3/người/năm của Hội tài nguyên nước quốc tế (IWRA). Đây được xem là một nghịch lý đối với một quốc gia có mạng lưới sông ngòi dày đặc như nước ta.

Điều đó cho thấy, nhận thức về tầm quan trọng của nước sạch, thực trạng khan hiếm nước sạch cũng như ý thức bảo vệ nguồn tài nguyên nước của người Việt Nam chưa cao, đây cũng chính là 1 trong các tác nhân làm nước sạch đã hiếm lại đang bị hoang phí ở nhiều nơi.
